I Am Black: Translations

Saying I’m black is kind of a weird statement. Not only because it’s not at all an
accurate description of my brown skin but because it was a descriptor created by someone who looks nothing like me. But I accept it because it will stay with me whether I want it or not and because as they say black is beautiful. And it is
beautiful and so is the melanin that protects me from the rays of the sun.

I'm a black man with a rich history that has been twisted and partially hidden by
certain writers of history. So I'm reclaiming some of that when I say I am black.
